Particle Streams is a meditation on stochastic processes, the
perception of chaos in natural phenomena, and how the experience
of this can bring about altered states of consciousness. I have always
been fascinated by what I call ‘happy accidents’—the sometimes
unanticipated results of random creative action, which is of course
at the heart of all improvisational art.
The piece utilizes a short video clip of falling snow against a grayish-
white sky background, which is processed with color filtering,
rotation and other effects in an attempt to transform the obvious
reference of snow into an other-worldly landscape that removes the
source context and becomes more of an imaginary landscape. The
soundtrack, a layered drone of vocal sounds modified using granular
synthesis techniques, hopes to amplify this effect.
