about

In a space 3 strings are tensed horizontally between the walls, all on the same height and with a distance in between them of about 30 centimeters: string 1, 2 and 3.

The strings are made of piano-wire or phosphor bronze and tensed (or tuned) with turnbuckles. Close to the turnbuckles, from string 1 and 3 a shaker is hanging from tie wraps. A shaker is a kind of loudspeaker that reproduces sound frequencies in the form of vibrations.

To string 2 a piëzo pick up is attached. The piëzo signal goes into a mixing board and the main output (L or R) from the mixer into a guitar amp/speaker.

A stereo line output from the mixer feeds a class D amplifier that connects with the shakers. When all equipment is turned on and the volumes are turned up nothing happens.

The system only works when the 3 strings are interconnected. We use mostly metal staff, U profile, aluminum, welding wire, etc. and lay it on top of the strings. The position of the metal determines the basic tuning of the sounding string 2. Once the connection is made, a feedback starts building up, causing the shakers to vibrate, making string 2 sound, etc.

Since all 3 strings are tuned differently, vibrations will change under the influence of the (different) vibrations of the other shaker, causing changes in the frequencies of the sounding string, etc.

Also, the metal lying on the strings slowly will be “transported” along the length and breadth of the strings, causing new changes.

What you hear is not a concert, not a composition, but just a process following the laws of physics translated into sound.

Petra and Mario started working together in 1983 as a dancer and a musician. At some point they decided that movement and sound are similar: if nothing moves, there is no sound and vice versa.

They present concerts, installations, performances, objects, graphic work and in situ projects world-wide. In 2010 they started their WAVES research project to investigate the artistic possibilities of acoustic (or: movement) feedback.
